How a Whole House Fan works

Boise is the perfect place for Whole House Fans. It has all the climactic conditions to use them for about 3 months of the year. Like the swallows returning to Capistrano, I get calls annually that sound something like this.

My second story it so hot in the evening the air condition is struggling to keep it 80 degrees. How can it be cool outside? I have fans all over the place, why cant it be cool inside too? I would give my left arm to get a draft going up here. I already have an attic fan. What else is there to do? For the love of God, I need to get some sleep!

What the Heck is a Whole House Fan?

A whole house fan is a fan that sits in the rafters of your home and turns on when you decide that the climactic conditions are just right to pressurize your attic. Here is a video

What Does Pressurizing Your Attic Do?

Forcing air that comes from the cool outdoors into you attic from inside your home does two things simultaneously.

  1. It pushes the hot cap out of your attic
  2. It draws in the cool outdoor air and creates a gentile breeze in your home.

Sounds too good to be true, It isn’t, I have used mine for years. That is exactly what it does. Sleeping with a cool breeze, is all it is cracked up to be. Although the heat of the day typically peaks around 5Pm it drops precipitously through the night. Use that cool air to cool your home at 1/10 of the energy cost of running your Air Condition. Give that system a rest. Close your home up in the AM and you will have a system that works for this time of year to keep your home comfortable and your energy costs at bay.

Where Can I Get a Whole House Fan in Boise?

I fell in love with a brand of whole house fan called Tamarack  Levco became the distributor for our region. Tamarack fans are well built and have some really cool features. You want one, call me and I will hook you up. I keep an inventory on hand so you can pick one up or we can have your prepaid order shipped to your home. If you want to install it yourself fine. We will be happy to give you a price to do the work. Installation typically cost $1,300 for us to install. Idaho Power loves them too. They offer a rebate for professional installation.
