As I age and grow into myself, now 66, I develop a different perspective on life and my Hokey Pokey. Naturally, as we’ve all learned, that’s what it’s all about at a tender age. As slowly as the moon slips through the night sky, I sense a palpable change. Though I hope my timeline is long enough to enjoy grandkids, I feel a shift in my corpus. I remember that I was born on my grandpa Ben’s 60th birthday, around the same time he retired. Retirement is a distant land that I plan to explore in about five years. I’m just getting going. I have enormous ideas and things to chase down.
I love to work and am doing meaningful work that keeps nearly a dozen families fed, clothed, and sheltered, and I am also involved in remodeling homes for appreciative people. I love the process and am constantly refining it into what I believe is a sustainable model.
My New Hokey Pokey
- I give more; if you want something from me, you only need to ask.
- I don’t hang out with friends as much, but when I do, I value time together more. I imagine the hole there would be if they were not there.
- I like being the star of the show and cooking for large groups.
- I understand that I unfortunately didn’t pick a mate for life. I will have to see where that goes.
- I am a sucker for a good cause. Lord knows there are more than I could ever give to, but there are a few where I can make a difference.
- I try to have more impactful relationships to share my knowledge and wisdom with which I am more free.
- I am starting to realize that time is a factor in my decisions. Who needs a 50-year roof? Not me.
- I love spending time with myself, being creative and reflective, and having a sanctuary and a recharging station I call home.
- I can typically forgive and forget faster. I do not sweat the small stuff as much as I used to.
- I love my vehicles and tinkering with them.
- I love my health and work to maintain it.
- I love connecting with wise people who fill me up.
- I like the seasons, sensing their change, and welcome each one for different reasons.
- I love not being too tied down. Travel is often spontaneous in my world.
- I value compassion and have no time for intolerance in my life.
- I hate losing friends. They are bits and pieces of my life. They all die too young.
The Holy Grail
I met a gentleman named Josh at a coffee shop the other day. He looked like a piece of art sitting across the room. He had a wooden burl cane on his table, a white beard, a green plaid Pendleton shirt, and a cool felt hat. I felt drawn to him. He was affable and was quick to join in the conversation. I took a few things away from that chance meeting. He said some powerful things that resonated. Being a few decades my senior, I immediately felt his wisdom flowing. He said, ” I don’t need the cane, but I liked the feel of wood in my hands.” It resonated. I share that love for wood. Then he said, “We were put on this earth to help each other.” I get it. Who am I to argue with him? Next time I see him, I will share the poem by Marge Percy To Be Of Use. I’ll bet we can chew on that one for a bit.
Outlook For The Coming Year
I am not ready to drift off into the sunset. We are planning an incredible year of remodeling services for about 20 clients. Budgeting and planning are an annual event that fills me up. Gaining a deeper understanding of my craft and seeking calm, creative time is high on the list. As I continue to put my right arm in and take my right arm out, I put my right arm in and shake it all about. May you be so lucky as to have my team remodel for you. Make the call today!

I wish we could schedule the bathroom remodels you so quickly and beautifully designed but alas, that not-50 year roof needs replacing first. I pray you don’t Hokey Pokey into retirement until we can arrange remodel date, Joe. You’re amazing.
Beth, your project is on hold for a very good reason. I will continue to be around for you as you have been for me. PS I met your new neighbors across the street. They had me over to look at working for them. I tried to reach out to introduce but I missed you. Vincent & Maria. Nice couple. Joe
Great article Joe. I love being your friend and hopefully we can hokey pokey in person again soon.
(Auto–correct must be set to Canadian, as it tried to change hokey to hockey, lol)
Keep up the good work.
Thanks Mark, Yes I caught that too, and fixed it, I look forward to visiting and experiencing all things Canadian with you. That darn spell check gets me in trouble all the time. All my best eh. Joe
