I had the great fortune to visit a sage man named Dr. H at the recommendation of a professional athlete and friend. He coaches folks on how to get better at whatever they are doing. Although his specialty is athletics, I learned a tremendous amount quickly, while my son, an athlete, got the lion’s share of the attention. He told a story that speaks to something I have done for years without realizing.
What You Look At Is What You Hit
This story was played out in session and illustrated what most of us do subconsciously and miss out on being able to perform at a higher level than we think we can. For example, athletes are breaking their records all over the Olympics. Aiming higher is one of the keys to better performance. We set the bar quite high. On-time, on Budget, and Happy Client—our Trifecta!
In a nutshell, he explained how most of us measure our performance against the best rather than against our own best. Then we fail to replay our performance or debrief what went less than great to try something better or at least different next time, essentially missing out on the good stuff. He called it picking up the coins lying around at your feet.
How We Use This Pearl In Our Practice
At Levco, we focus a lot of energy on evaluating ourselves. One of the cool things we do is examine projects we completed under a microscope.
If we consider a remodeling project life cycle, I would say that a completed project has earned retirement status. Upon completion, I visited with my clients to candidly discuss what worked and what we could have done better.
“What have we learned from this project?” This is how I ask everyone on my team who participated. We pick up the coins (so to speak), adjust our process, and move forward. This opportunity is only valuable if we do not rush and miss this precious moment.
We Are Now An Integrated Remodeling Machine
We are now a sophisticated business with processes and systems, checklists, and a cutting-edge cloud-based communication system. We have a full-time staff of 9
Levco is working on and in the business at the same time. To paraphrase Jim Collins in Good to Great, I think I’ve got the right people on the bus doing what they are great at and having a good time. The bottom line is, “If you’re not having fun, you’re not doing it right,” and I am having fun by golly.
As the full-time owner of a vibrant remodeling company, I understand that an experienced remodeling firm is the only kind you want to put your precious home in the hands of. This explains why we get strong referrals and callbacks for handling additional chores over time.
