To Be Of Use

Reading Time: 3 minutes

I received this beautiful poem written by Marge Piercy and read by Mr George Rose of Willard Junior High School in Berkeley California, some time in early May 2012.

To be of use
by Marge Piercy

Amish Barn Raising

The people I love the best
jump into work head first
without dallying in the shallows
and swim off with sure strokes almost out of sight.
They seem to become natives of that element,
the black sleek heads of seals
bouncing like half submerged balls.

I love people who harness themselves, an ox to a heavy cart,
who pull like water buffalo, with massive patience,
who strain in the mud and the muck to move things forward,
who do what has to be done, again and again.

I want to be with people who submerge
in the task, who go into the fields to harvest
and work in a row and pass the bags along,
who stand in the line and haul in their places,
who are not parlor generals and field deserters
but move in a common rhythm
when the food must come in or the fire be put out.

The work of the world is common as mud.
Botched, it smears the hands, crumbles to dust.
But the thing worth doing well done
has a shape that satisfies, clean and evident.
Greek amphoras for wine or oil,
Hopi vases that held corn, are put in museums
but you know they were made to be used.
The pitcher cries for water to carry
and a person for work that is real.

When I read this poem, it reminded me of why I have a passion for tools and love to work with my hands and brain. It reminded me of learning my work ethic from my father and my can do spirit learned in scouting. It made me have energy to join hands like the Amish working together on a barn raising, and make things happen, like Thomas Paine’s saying, ” Lead, follow, or get out of the way”

Remodeling in Boise

As I create a world class remodeling company, I plow forward looking for the right way to do things, the right people to represent me and how to systematize my work practices, ever seeking ways to provide value and make a decent living. I find it amazing how complicated business is and how many people do it well. I realize that doing it my way is exhilarating and personally rewarding.

To Levco, remodeling is all about improving living spaces for people. I have committed myself to making systems which clarify and simplify my processes.  My pledge is to be trustworthy, socially responsible and inclusive of my community.  I believe that by being that guy that tirelessly leads with a “get ‘er done” mentality I will create the company everyone would like to be a part of.
