Laughing At Myself

Reading Time: 3 minutes

I was frustrated with a pot that uses electricity to heat water quickly. When I went to pour the water, it dribbled. For some reason, there is a screen filter in it, which I assumed was the cause, so I removed it, and it still dribbled. I tried pouring fast and slow, but no matter, it dribbled. I was on the verge of looking to replace it. Amazon makes it so easy. I had nothing to lose; what if I took a Dremel to it? Then, I took a moment and studied the situation. That’s when I realized it was a simple operator error. Stop me if I have told this story before. I don’t want to become that guy.

Tools Are Only As Good As The Hands They Are In

Shaper Origin

There is a “snap-shut” position that I was not engaging at the lid. The tool was designed correctly; I was using it wrong. What a relief. There was no need to get something new or take drastic measures to modify the lid, but I was on the verge. Chances are, that is why it ended up in my hands in the first place. HA HA. Do you know someone who uses a crescent wrench as a hammer? Me too; I should yank his man card.

It reminds me of the old-school logger who was introduced to a chainsaw and reluctantly agreed to try it. He hated it. Upon the salesman’s return, he asked the logger how he liked it. “Well,” said the logger. “I hate to disappoint you, but I will stick with my handsaw.” The salesman was stumped; he pulled the cord and clamped down on the GAS-fired chainsaw. As it roared to life, the frightened logger said, “WOA! What’s that sound?” It got me thinking that this lesson could be applied to many things.

Education Is At My Fingertips

Old dogs need to learn new tricks; we laugh that millennials need to figure out everything for us. The TV remote can be a challenge, and I laugh at myself and the things I wish I knew more about. The joke is that there are educational opportunities all around us. A Luddite is how a friend described herself, and frankly, I was against email when it first came out so much for that being a fad.

Embracing Technology

As I age, I get more excited about the things being developed and how it all gets integrated. I just took a class at my local woodworkers’ shop on using my Shaper Origin. I was sure I could do the basics with this fantastic tool, but I knew it was far more capable than I. Whoda thunk I would be pioneering an app that helps contractors identify lead-based paint? Artificial Intelligence technology is stretching my mind right now. The applications of this technology are blowing the doors off of my imagination. The train is leaving the station, and I plan to be on it.
