Some people adapt to the way things are, and others change things to meet their needs. I work for people in the second camp.
Remodeling Is A Dream
I get inquiries from people at all stages of remodeling. Typically, it involves some level of discomfort with existing conditions and a dream of better living conditions. These are the three major groups of prospects I have the pleasure of working with.
- Some know exactly what they want
- Some just come with a feeling
- Some come with architects’ plans
They often have a shopping list of what a good solution might be, but are open to better ideas. Being able to illustrate what it will look like is magical for them. My favorite time is early in the design process, after seeing existing conditions and looking at alternative solutions that pop into my head. I get this superpower of being able to put myself in a new space and experience it.
Honestly, this is the gooey part of remodeling for me. The next time I get to sense the same sense of satisfaction is showing people what we did, waving my arms around, telling and showing them what it used to be like, and how we solved the problems that were presented. I just got to do it with a building inspector who was doing a final inspection. “Wow, Joe, this house is beautiful. What did you do to it?” Music to my ears. I went on to show him, and he was dumbfounded. “It looks like it was always this way.” That is a feeling that is hard to replicate.
Flow
I have mentioned this thing often, and it plays a huge role in design. Using industry guidelines is a must. Depending upon the era of the home, each one could be unique, or in more recent times, say in a subdivision, there are typically a handful of homes that have identical or flipped floor plans and a myriad of small tweaks that get done over time. When you nail a remodeling project for a client in one of these cookie-cutter homes, you get the attention of all of their neighbors.
Making The Dream Come Alive
I recall going to Disney Land as a kid and being overwhelmed with the ability to experience something unimaginable. I am sure that those with the vision and the ability to make the experience. Kudos to those who trust me and my team to take your house apart and put it back together in a way that sings.
